KICKER Harley-Davidson Audio Upgrade Kits

KICKER Harley-Davidson Audio Upgrade Kits

KICKER is well known for its car audio, marine and powersports audio upgrade solutions. Continuing that tradition of impressive performance and value are four newly upgraded audio system solutions for Harley-Davidson Road Glide, Street Glide, Electra Glide and Ultra Glide touring bikes. These kits are designed to deliver a big upgrade over the factory audio system and install without modifications to the bike or wiring. Let’s check out the new KICKER Harley-Davidson audio kits.

KICKER Harley-Davidson Audio Kits

The new KICKER Harley-Davidson audio kits are designed for four applications, covering 1996 to 2013 and 2014 to 2023 models. The kits for the earlier applications feature a set of 5.25-inch coaxial speakers, while the 2014-and-newer Street/Electra/Ultra Glide and 2015-and-newer Road Glide kits include a pair of newly designed 6.5-inch drivers.

Kit Application

  • 50HDS962 1996 – 2013 Street / Electra / Ultra Glide
  • 50HDS144 2014 – 2023 Street / Electra / Ultra Glide
  • 50HDR982 1998 – 2013 Road Glide
  • 50HDR154 2015 – 2023 Road Glide
KICKER Harley-Davidson Audio Upgrade Kits
The 5.25-inch Harley-Davidson-specific speakers feature a bridge-mounted tweeter to maximize woofer cone area.

The 5.25-inch speakers feature a weather- and UV-resistant polypropylene woofer cone and a 20 mm neo-titanium-dome tweeter mounted on a bridge in front of the woofer. The woofer features a neodymium magnet to keep the system light and maintain the bike’s balance. Big, heavy speakers add significant mass, raising the bike’s center of gravity. The speakers have a nominal impedance of two ohms to extract maximum power from the included amplifier. Grilles are included for a clean and tidy look.

The new 6.5-inch Harley-Davidson speakers from KICKER mount without the need for an adapter ring.

The newly designed 6.5-inch speakers feature a new mounting flange that bolts directly into the factory speaker location without any modifications to the bike. These new two-ohm speakers also feature weather- and UV-resistant polypropylene woofer cones and a super-efficient 20 mm neo-titanium-dome tweeter. Neodymium magnets are used on the woofers, and stamped mesh grilles are included in the 50HDR154 kit. The speakers are rated to handle 60 watts of power continuously with a peak power handling of 120 watts.

Motorcycle Audio Amplifier

KICKER Harley-Davidson Audio Upgrade Kits
The KICKER KPX300.4 is a four-channel, 300-watt, high-efficiency amplifier designed for motorcycle audio applications.

All four kits include the new KPX300.4 four-channel ultra-compact amplifier. The amp is rated at 45 watts into four-ohm loads and an impressive 75 watts into two-ohm loads like those found in the kits. The amp is weather-resistant, so it can handle being splashed. Electronic high-pass crossovers are included on the amp, and the crossover points are set via DIP switches on the end panel.

The KPX300.4 features FIT+ differential inputs, making it directly compatible with the BTL output of the stock Harley-Davidson radio or an aftermarket solution. The efficient KPX300.4 has relatively low current demands, an important consideration given the limited charging-system capacity of a motorcycle.

Although the kits only come with a pair of speakers, the extra amplifier channels make it easy to add rear speakers. The HDBX14 rear bag lid cut-in kit is a great addition to 2014 through 2023 bikes.

Mounting Plate and Wire Harnesses

All four kits include a stainless steel mounting plate for the amplifier, allowing it to fit neatly under the fairing with no modifications required. Likewise, the kits include a wiring harness with power and ground connections, a fuse and all speaker wiring to simplify installation. OE-style connectors are provided, so everything plugs in cleanly.

The 50HDS144 and 50HDR154 installations also require that the factory Harley-Davidson radio be reflashed for proper operation. This can be performed by a Harley-Davidson dealer or a shop equipped with compatible programming equipment.

Product Spotlight: KICKER SoloXS L7XS

KICKER SoloXS

Recently, the folks at KICKER have given us a reason to take a look at a product that’s designed to literally shake the industry – the KICKER SoloXS L7XS subwoofers. Designed with massive continuous power handling, extreme excursion capability and some unique service features, these monster subwoofers will move air like few others. Let’s check them out!

KICKER SoloXS Specifications

The first thing you’ll notice about the KICKER SoloXS series subwoofers is that they are part of the L7 series, which means they are square drivers. KICKER specifies that the 12-inch drivers have an effective surface area of 625 square centimeters. Typical round 12-inch subwoofers are in the 450 to 550 square centimeter range, so this is a LOT more cone area per subwoofer. More cone area means more efficiency, which is king in the game of producing as much bass as possible.

Moving on, the Solo XS drivers are available in 12- and 15-inch sizes with your choice of one- or two-ohm voice coil impedance.

With respect to general specifications, the subwoofers are rated for 1,500 to 3,000 watts continuous power. While the power-handling numbers are impressive, the Xmax specification is otherworldly at 43.1 mm (1.71 inches). Frequency response is specified as 18 to 100 Hz for the 15-inch and 20 to 100 Hz for the 12-inch.

KICKER makes it clear that these subwoofers aren’t just one-note wonders. Despite their competition-level output capability, the SoloXS drivers are designed to deliver musical bass when installed in a properly designed enclosure.

KICKER SoloXS
Rated to handle up to 3000 watts of power, the SoloXS woofers are serious about bass.

Design Features

The SoloXS subwoofers are based on eight-spoke cast-aluminum frames with extensive cooling openings beneath the spider mounting ledge. At the base of the chassis is a massive triple-stacked 705-ounce ferrite magnet assembly. The T-Yoke beneath the magnets includes eight vents directly under the voice coil to allow hot air to escape from the motor assembly. KICKER calls this Forced-Air Cooling.

Knowing that these drivers might see as much as 55 amps of current through the voice coil, the electrical connections are appropriately beefy. The spring-loaded terminals can handle 8-AWG cables, but there is also a terminal block that accepts dual 4-AWG leads. This makes daisy-chaining multiple drivers together in parallel easy.

The voice coil windings in the SoloXS subwoofers have a diameter of 3.4 inches and are made of aluminum. Aluminum weighs about one-third as much as copper, so the mass savings are significant. The drivers use an oversized Nomex dual-spider design that purportedly allows up to 5 inches of peak-to-peak cone excursion. The cones are made from 4 mm-thick fiberglass-reinforced pulp paper and feature a carbon-fiber dust cap. The surround is made from nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) and includes proprietary vertical ribs at the corners to ensure unobstructed excursion. There are two rows of stitching to help keep the surround firmly attached to the cone.

KICKER SoloXS
Forced-Air Cooling helps the SoloXS drivers handle thousands of watts of power.

Replaceable Cone Assembly

If you’ve attended an SPL contest, then you have likely seen a blown subwoofer or two. When competitors are trying to eke out every tenth or hundredth of a decibel of output from their systems, sometimes parts fail. KICKER knows that a blown subwoofer is a fast way to end your day. To that end, they offer recone kits for all four subwoofers. The assemblies include the cone, voice coil former, surround, spider and leads. The kits cost about 25% as much as a new subwoofer, so they are quite affordable in the grand scheme of things.

The key feature here is that no adhesives are required to perform the repair. The recone kits bolt into the basket using 16 hex-head fasteners in an aluminum ring around the top edge of the driver. There is another dozen fasteners under the spider plateau. Not having to worry about aligning the voice coil, how much glue to apply or waiting for things to set up is a massive time-saver and ensures the geometry of everything is perfect.

Lastly, the engineering team went to great lengths to ensure the users could choose either impedance of recone kits. If you want to switch from 2-ohm subwoofers to a 1-ohm impedance, just buy the appropriate part number.

KICKER SoloXS
The SoloXS recone kits can be installed in minutes thanks to hex-head fasteners.

Massive Bass for Your Ride

KICKER hasn’t left bass heads wanting for power. Their Warhorse WXA3600.1 amplifier is rated at 3600 watts of continuous power into a one-ohm load, ensuring the SoloXS subwoofers have the juice they need to perform.

If you are in the market for a subwoofer capable of serious output, then it’s time to drop into a local authorized KICKER retailer and ask about the SoloXS series of drivers. You can find a retailer near you using the locator tool on the KICKER website.

Be sure to follow our friends from Stillwater on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to learn about the amazing products they offer and events they attend.

Product Spotlight: KICKER KMC5

KICKER KMC5

Going back a few decades, only a handful of car audio manufacturers offered marine-specific source unit options. These were often car radios with oversized front panels with waterproofing features. Now, there are dozens of companies that offer marine source units. One that stands out for its features and performance is the KICKER KMC5, which is the subject of this product spotlight. Let’s check it out!

Features of the KICKER KMC5

The KMC5 is a marine source unit with a face measuring 5.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches tall. The radio mounts through a three-inch hole, so it can replace a small round unit or a large gauge in an instrument cluster. If nothing else, drilling the mounting hole with a hole saw is much easier for your installer than cutting out a rectangle with an air saw. The radio needs about seven inches of clearance behind the mounting surface for the chassis and wire connections. The front panel is IP66 rated, so you don’t have to worry about rain or splashes causing issues. Of course, KICKER’s Real Marine rating means the radio is built with materials that won’t fade, chalk, crack, or corrode when exposed to the sun or saltwater.

The radio features a sunlight-viewable 3.5-inch full-color LCD screen that provides a clear view of what’s playing from a USB thumb drive, SiriusXM satellite radio, or the built-in AM/FM tuner. USB support is compatible with FAT32-formatted thumb drives, and media formats include MP2, MP3, WMA, WAV16, FLAC, AAC, ALAC, and M4A. You can also stream music or a service like Pandora, iHeartRadio, Spotify, or Apple Music over the Bluetooth A2DP connection. The radio includes Bluetooth AVRCP so you can control your smartphone or media player from the source unit.

While we are on the topic of audio sources, it’s worth noting that the KMC5 includes a Weatherband tuner and an auxiliary input. You can use the input with something like a TV, DVD player or media player if you have a larger boat. Speaking of video, the KMC5 has a video input that can be used with an optional backup camera. There’s an external trigger included, so the rear camera can be activated with a switch at the helm. This would be a great option for backing a boat into a narrow slip at the marina.

If you’ve looked closely at the buttons on the face, then you might have seen the Favorite option. This is a quick-access button to whatever source, radio station or weather information channel you want.

KICKER KMC5
The front panel of the KMC5 radio features a 3.5-inch color display, making it easy to see what’s playing.

System Features and Specifications

Moving on from source options, we should discuss the outputs from the radio. The KMC5 includes six channels of amplification, each rated to deliver 25 watts into a 4-ohm load and 40 watts into a 2-ohm load. You’ll notice the power wire on the amp harness is larger than the typical 14- or 16-gauge conductor you’d find on a 22-watt x 4 radio. Your installer may need to run a dedicated 10-AWG cable for power and ground to the fuse panel at your point. Hey, if you want an amp, even one in a source unit, to produce power, you need to feed it power properly.

On the preamp side, the radio includes stereo front and rear outputs, a pair of subwoofer outputs and a 2-zone RCA output. The fifth and sixth speaker output connections are assigned to the second audio zone output. So, you could power speakers beside the TV, in the galley or a berth. If you are using the preamp outputs with a separate amplifier, the second audio zone might be ideal for a set of wakeboard tower speakers. This system design would give you separate control of the zone-2 volume. In fact, you can rename this separate zone to Tower, Transom, Cockpit, or Interior in the setup menu. You can also configure the Zone-2 volume to track the main volume or be adjustable on its own.

KICKER KMC5
The KICKER KMC5 features a dedicated second output zone that can function with the master volume control or on its own.

Audio Features

The KICKER KMC5 includes an adjustable high-pass crossover for the front and rear speaker and preamp outputs. The filter can be set to 50, 80, or 120 hertz to suit the size of the speakers in the system. The radio has two tone-control options. It has conventional bass, midrange and treble adjustability, or it can be switched to Custom EQ mode. The Custom EQ includes Rock, Pop, Jazz and custom options. In the custom menu, you can boost or cut audio at 50, 125, 250, 500, 1k, 3k, and 8k Hz center frequencies to fine-tune the system.

You can expand the KICKER KMC5 with the two-inch KRC12 remote or the KRC55 Digital remote. The KRC55 includes a color display that replicates what’s shown on the main radio screen.

KICKER KMC5
The KMC5 ships with black and chrome trim rings, so your installer can match the radio’s style to the rest of the helm.

Upgrade Your Boat with the KICKER KMC5 Today!

If you are in the market for a full-featured multimedia radio for your boat, or even a side-by-side or UTV, then drop by a local authorized KICKER retailer today and ask about the KMC5 radio. You can find a KICKER dealer near you by using the locator tool on their website.

Be sure to follow KICKER on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to learn more about their impressive car audio, marine, motorcycle, powersport and lifestyle product offerings.

Product Spotlight: KICKER KEYLOC

KICKER KEYLOC

There are a dozen or so high-quality line output converters available to help your installer integrate an amplifier into a factory-installed audio system. That said, most of them are simple devices that do nothing more than adjust voltage gain and perhaps apply some equalization to the signal. KICKER’s KEYLOC is a unique solution because it features a built-in digital signal processor that undoes equalization, delays, and all-pass filters applied to the factory signal. The goal is to establish a clean signal that you can build on. Let’s check out the outstanding KICKER KEYLOC.

Basic Features of the KICKER KEYLOC

Let’s start with the basics. The KEYLOC is a two-channel line output converter that can accept up to 10 volts of signal in low-level mode and an impressive 40 volts in high-level mode. In low-level mode, the KEYLOC presents a 60-ohm load to the driving amplifier. Many factory-installed source units and amplifiers will go into protection mode without a proper load. External resistors are available from KICKER if needed for high-level operation. The maximum output of the KEYLOC is 10 volts.

The KEYLOC measures 5.5 by 2.75 inches in footprint and is 1.375 inches thick. A Molex connector on the left side includes two speaker input channels, power and ground connections, and remote turn-on and remote output wiring. The remote output activates automatically when the KEYLOC detects a DC offset voltage on the input speaker wires, enabling an aftermarket amplifier to turn on. There are a pair of RCA output jacks on the right side of the chassis to feed your new amplifier.

The top panel of the KEYLOC features two stereo potentiometers and a display with five LEDs. The pots are for adjusting input sensitivity and output voltage. The LEDs indicate power and are part of the signal testing and KEY processing features of the KEYLOC.

KICKER KEYLOC
The LED display on the front panel of the KEYLOC provides your installer with information about frequency response and correction processing.

Audio Analysis Tool

Depending on the design of your factory audio system, it might be difficult to find a full-range signal. The Low, Mid, and High LEDs on top of the KEYLOC can be used with the provided pink-noise test track to determine whether you have a full-range signal. The Low indicator illuminates when there is sufficient audio information in the 20 Hz to 200 Hz range. The Mid indicator monitors 200 Hz to 2 kHz, and the High LED monitors audio above 2 kHz. If you are missing low- or high-frequency information, the KEY processing will not produce a full-bandwidth signal for your new equipment.

The KEY to Audio Excellence

The KEYLOC uses KICKER’s patent-pending KEY algorithm to analyze a special audio test signal. The signal includes sine sweeps, pink noise, and impulses, which reveal frequency response, signal delay, and all-pass filter processing. Once measured, the KEYLOC applies its own signal processing to eliminate these attributes from the audio signal. The result is a flat frequency response signal that will allow new speakers, amplifiers, and processors to sound amazing. The process is fully automated and takes between two and 10 minutes to complete. Your installer can even temporarily bypass the correction to demonstrate how much the system has improved thanks to the KEYLOC.

KICKER KEYLOC
The KEYLOC is small enough to hide behind the radio in your dash, yet powerful enough to correct even the most complex audio signals.

Why You Need the KICKER KEYLOC

Factory-installed audio systems are typically designed to extract the best possible performance from inexpensive speakers. As such, radios and amplifiers include signal processing such as equalization, delays, and all-pass filters to create an optimized listening experience. Don’t be fooled: this processing is present even in simple “radio-only” systems and isn’t exclusive to premium systems with complex multi-channel amplifiers.

The goal of upgrading a car audio system is, of course, to make it sound better. As such, you are likely to add subwoofers and new speakers to the vehicle. The equalization that worked with the factory speakers is not likely to be ideal for the higher-performance options you’ve chosen. Eliminating factory processing with a product like the KICKER KEYLOC is crucial to achieving great sound in your car, truck, or SUV. The KEYLOC is also great for motorcycles, side-by-sides, and marine applications.

Visit a KICKER Dealer Today

When it’s time to make your vehicle’s stereo sound better, drop by an authorized KICKER retailer to find out whether the KEYLOC is needed to undo the signal processing built into your factory-installed audio system. You can find an authorized KICKER retailer near you using the Dealer Locator on the KICKER website.
